First, we are organizing a conversation next week, ‘IS THE FUTURE FLAT?’ with Tod Williams, Billie Tsien, and Vivian Loftness:
Have the protests and pandemic shifted the future life of our city from the skyline to the sidewalk? A discussion of the shift from a vertical to horizontal city, and its implications for our health, happiness, and architecture.
7pm (EDT) on Wednesday, September 23.
If you have thoughts about the topic, or suggested reading - tell us. It will be a focus in our upcoming issue.
Second, a book of interest: Mariana Mogilevich has just published The Invention of Public Space, Designing for Inclusion in Lindsay’s New York. Mayor Lindsay (term ran 1966 - 1973) is one of those examples of a mayor whose term ended badly - was written off as a failure, but whose disciples went on to shape public policy in New York - right up until today. If you would like to review the book, tell us.
Finally, events! I have a vague recollection of a quote, “Time is a construction to prevent everything from happening all at once, space is a construction to prevent everything from happening at the same place.” Certainly online streaming events are testing the importance of place for a conversation. With all of the schools back in session and the fall season launched, there is a banquet, with six events just today available.
If you plan to attend one and want to write it up, tell us! editor@nyra.nyc. All times are EDT (therefore the noon talk at 1 pm).
