TONIGHT 6PM — The Architecture of Socialization and Control: A Conversation with Amber Wiley and Joy Knoblauch
Dear reader,
Please join The New York Review of Architecture and Interference Archive this evening at 6pm EST for a conversation with scholars Amber Wiley and Joy Knoblauch for a discussion of the architecture of socialization and control in schools and housing in the context of the current protests against racism and police brutality. This will be an informal conversation moderated by the Review and open to audience questions and discussion.
Amber Wiley is Assistant Professor of Art History at Rutgers University. She specializes in architecture, urbanism, and African American cultural studies. Her research interests are centered on the social aspects of design and how it affects urban communities—architecture as a literal and figural structure of power. She focuses on the ways local and national bodies have made the claim for the dominating narrative and collective memory of cities and examines how preservation and public history contribute to the creation and maintenance of the identity and “sense of place” of a city. Her book Concrete Solutions: Brutalism and Black Power in the Nation’s Capital is in progress. You can read Wiley’s article “Schools and Prisons” here.
Joy Knoblauch is Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan. She teaches history and theory of architecture as an exploration of architecture's engagement with politics and science. She is on the steering committee of the University of Michigan's Science, Technology & Society Program and the steering committee for the Graduate Certificate in Healthy Cities. Her first book, The Architecture of Good Behavior: Psychology and Modern Institutional Design in Postwar America was published in April 2020. You can read Knoblauch’s article “Defensible Space and Open Society” here.
