NYRA Reviews a book: The People's Trust
Join Michael Vahrenwald, Christopher Neville, and Marianela D'Aprile this Wednesday at 7pm
This Wednesday at 7pm we are co-hosting a talk with the bookstore Head Hi on the new book The People’s Trust, a study of the changing financial institution, specifically the repurposed remains of 19th and 20th century banks across the United States. The monumentality of these neoclassical facades stands in contrast with their new roles as liquor stores, pawn shops, churches, department stores and pharmacies. The work continues photographer Michael Vahrenwald’s investigation of locations where landscape, politics, and economics intersect, and poses questions as to what value can be derived from photographing the built world. In the case of The People’s Trust, layers of history and time are inscribed onto the fallen fronts of capitalistic glory. The book includes an essay by Wolfgang Scheppe and a poem by Richard Brautigan.
For the launch we will host a brief conversation with Vahrenwald (the photographer), Christopher Neville (a historical preservation expert), and Marianela D'Aprile (our new Deputy Editor).
We will be on Head Hi’s outdoor terrace (weather forecast = sunny with a high of 57) as well as on zoom, the conversation starts at 7pm.
(And if you cannot make it but are intrigued by the book, support a local bookstore and purchase it from Head Hi’s webshop)
