Today I write not from New York but Wisconsin, where I have been in a cabin with my family for the past week, and have had two recent reading encounters:
The Great Indoors, by Emily Anthes, takes a scientific look at how buildings can improve our health. Tell us if you want to review it.
An article in The Economist about how dangerous for our health nursing homes have been during the pandemic - the conclusion? Break them up. Smaller is better.
On to business:
Fundraiser! We have just 7 prints still available for purchase after beginning our fundraiser last week. The drawing was donated to the Review by one of our longtime readers and supporters, Reiser + Umemoto. The print (above) is an unrolled elevation drawing of Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto’s O-14 tower in Dubai. Each risograph print is signed and numbered by the architects on heavyweight, cotton-fiber paper (Arches 88, 330gsm). Each measures 10.5” x 16”, comes unframed, and was printed by a83 in 2020 in an edition of 35.
The remaining prints are available for $100/each + insured shipping via FedEx. Prints can also be picked-up in-person from a83 in Soho. Please contact editor@nyra.nyc if you would like to purchase a print.
If you miss these, we are holding 5 for a future fundraiser, at a higher price, so we can pay our contributors better. We also donated one to Design Yardsale, where we are happy to say its sale raised $540.
Back to School. These coming weeks the engines of the profession, the architecture schools, resume - if you are a student, or a faculty, would you mind sending us a short note about what that looks like? Is it all remote? Will there be studio? Shortened schedules? Reduced tuition? Reduced staff? Reconfigured pedagogy? Stuff that seems boring and obvious to you, but is invisible to the outside world. We may compile a few accounts and include it in a future pitch sheet.
Reimagine. The Architectural League is organizing a series of workshops to reimagine “the converging and ongoing crises of COVID-19, climate change, radical economic inequality, pervasive racism, and racist violence require that all systems, infrastructures, and institutions” - to participate apply by August 24.
Events. So many conversations this week! All of them - except possibly Thursday’s ICAA talk - are remote. If you want to be our correspondent and write one up, tell us - editor@nyra.nyc.
